As with all aspects of life, the Cancer Care Foundation is a cumulation of multiple projects and talents of individuals that collectively have merged in a journey to create a culture of giving among generations.
This project started by Dr. Michael Tulkki, an endodontist in Wayzata, MN who decided to design an athletic medical scrub. Fast forward a few years and his son, Ethan, who shares a strong interest for football, required a sixth grade service project. At the same time, one of the student athletes from the University of MN football team who has battled osteosarcoma five times while managing to continue to be a collegiate athlete was receiving national attention for his fight against cancer.
During conversations with this athlete, Ethan, his dad, and three other six grade teammates (Wes, Koen and Lucas, listed below) decided to produce a medical shirt for patients receiving cancer treatment. The design is meant to create an athletic shirt that is comfortable yet allows patients and medical professionals to easily access the port for delivery of medications.
With the initial help of a Go Fund Me page, money raised by friends, teachers, and family for our initial 50 shirts. Then with the help of a grant received from the Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund an additional 300 shirts have been donated to local hospitals.
Our mission is to make cancer treatment more comfortable through the development of shirts designed for easy access for port delivery of medications. With over 350 donated shirts so far, we aim to make our shirts a standard for cancer treatment across the US.
Starting in 2019 with a "Concept " and an understanding of design and apparel production from a previous business endeavor, a "Plan" was created. A Wayzata, MN endodontist, Dr. Michael Tulkki as well as his son , Ethan, and three other Orono classmates formed a group to help others. They were inspired by a story of a University of MN Gopher football …
